ZPE Systems Unveils IT Resilience Products at Cisco Live, Including Solution to Protect AI Investments

NSC Core Edition and Gate SR with Jetson module

Budget-friendly console server product and dual-CPU NVIDIA platform help organizations protect their infrastructure and AI investments.

Fremont, CA — May 28, 2024 — ZPE Systems, a leader in network infrastructure and management solutions that is now part of Legrand, launches two new products at Cisco Live Las Vegas: the Nodegrid Serial Console Core Edition and the Nodegrid Gate SR platform with embedded NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano™ module. These innovative products will empower organizations to better protect their vital IT infrastructure and NVIDIA AI investments from the growing risks of cyber-attacks.

The Nodegrid Serial Console Core Edition is a cost-effective third generation console server that resolves the vulnerabilities left by legacy console servers. It leverages drop-in Isolated Management Infrastructure (IMI) to fully separate management traffic from production networks. The creation of a separate management network provides physical and logical isolation from unauthorized users and cyber threats.

“The first step in cybersecurity resiliency is proper IT hygiene, starting with the right architecture to remove anxiety from automated patching and recovery,” said Koroush Saraf, VP of Products and Marketing at ZPE Systems. “The Core Edition simplifies IMI, providing secure, isolated management access from any branch office or remote location via any LAN or WAN link type, including cellular connections. This gives customers a safe environment for patching or configuration rollback even during an outage or cyberattack.”

Though IMI has been used primarily by hyperscalers and big tech brands, the Core Edition enables businesses of all sizes to build their own IMI networks and reap the benefits of a layered security approach at an affordable price.

“With the NSCP Core Edition, our goal is to make big tech’s resilience practices accessible and affordable for all organizations,” emphasizes Arnaldo Zimmermann, Cofounder of ZPE and VP/GM at Legrand. “Now, anyone can drop in our Gen 3 console server, create their IMI, and close those vulnerabilities created by their outdated devices.”

ZPE is also releasing the Nodegrid Gate SR with embedded Jetson module. This new platform internally hosts the NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano™ module, serving as an out-of-band device for initial bring-up, patching, and upgrading when running NVIDIA workloads. ZPE’s Gate SR with embedded Jetson module offers a dual-CPU platform that uses the same IMI concept for provisioning AI workloads via out-of-band path and allows customers to deploy, manage, and upgrade remotely via ZPE Cloud. This new Nodegrid platform enables organizations to improve industrial floor safety, campus security, and manufacturing quality control, by deploying 3rd party computer vision software at the edge. Organizations can now add resilience and recovery to the fleet of their NVIDIA AI workloads with ZPE embedded or external AI hardware devices.

Cyberthreats are Soaring: ZPE Systems Urges Immediate Action with Gen 3 Console Servers to Thwart Breaches

Press Release Complete EOL replacement solution

Organizations using end-of-life console servers must reduce their vulnerability exposure and secure their infrastructure comprehensively by using ZPE’s console servers, installation services and configuration engineering.

Fremont, CA, May 2, 2024 — As cyberattacks continue to rise, ZPE Systems, a leader in network management infrastructure, recently acquired by Legrand, is urging organizations to  transition to Generation 3 console servers as part of their security strategies. With other well-known infrastructure providers discontinuing support for serial consoles already in use within data centers, communication networks and other commercial and industrial environments, the need to upgrade is paramount.

Console servers are the backbone of remote IT management, providing essential access to network devices and servers. However, using discontinued console servers poses significant security risks. Outdated firmware may contain known vulnerabilities that enable cyber attackers to infiltrate critical systems, causing costly data breaches and operational disruptions.

Despite these substantial risks, many organizations hesitate to replace their outdated infrastructure, citing budget constraints, labor costs and concerns about infrastructure disruption. Arnaldo Zimmermann, cofounder of ZPE Systems, highlights this dilemma, saying, “Organizations face financial constraints when considering hardware upgrades, especially when existing infrastructure seems to be working fine. When you consider the capex, labor costs and time it takes to physically install and configure new equipment, it’s easy to see why organizations say, ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.’”

To address these challenges, ZPE Systems now offers a comprehensive solution designed to alleviate budgetary concerns and streamline the replacement process:

1. New Cost-Effective Replacement Options

ZPE’s Nodegrid devices enable organizations to secure their management infrastructure with new budget-friendly, Gen 3 console servers. These range in cost from premium options to small yet powerful, budget-friendly units.

2. New Professional Installation & Recycling Services

As needed, ZPE Systems offers solutions for physical installation process and recycling of old equipment, minimizing downtime and ensuring environmental responsibility. ZPE connects organizations to a network of trusted partners including ByteBridge, Mirapath, Trace3, and others.

3. New Tailored Configuration Services

ZPE’s engineers provide customized configuration services to transfer the old configuration to new systems and optimize the performance and security of the new console servers.

“There’s a lot of friction in upgrading,” adds Koroush Saraf, VP of Products and Marketing at ZPE Systems. “We’ve heard of customers using outdated devices for years, who won’t replace because they just don’t have the time, money or manpower. Our goal is to remove that friction, streamlining the transition process and empowering organizations to enhance their security posture without the added burden.”

By utilizing Gen 3 console servers from ZPE, customers benefit from 3rd party security validated firmware that addresses Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) as well as hardware security features designed to mitigate cybersecurity threats. Organizations can safeguard their assets, protect sensitive data, and maintain operational continuity in an increasingly volatile digital landscape.

Nodegrid OS and ZPE Cloud achieve industry’s highest security with Synopsys

Synopsys and ZPE validation

How do you address security across the software development life cycle?

“Security is the cornerstone of ZPE’s infrastructure management solutions,” says Koroush Saraf, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at ZPE Systems. “Our automation platform touches every aspect of our customers’ critical infrastructure, from networking and firewall gear, to servers, smart PDUs, and everything else in their production network. The ZPE portfolio is architected with the strongest security and implemented with the same level of scrutiny.”

Given the critical nature of enterprise networking, security is paramount to ZPE’s customers.

“The average time taken to apply patches and fix vulnerabilities can be more than 205 days,” says Saraf. “This is due to many reasons: limited resources and time, concerns that something may break, or in some cases, admins don’t even know that a critical patch is available. That’s why ZPE takes on the responsibility for customers. They’re assured that the systems running their infrastructure are running the latest, most secure software. And if a patch fails, our built-in undo button reverts to a safe configuration before any damage can be done.”

Saraf adds, “Like with all modern organizations, ZPE uses a complex mix of proprietary, open source, and third-party software obtained through a variety of sources from the software supply chain. Think third-party libraries, packaged software from ISVs, IoT and embedded firmware, and especially open source components. In fact, studies show that over three-quarters of the code in any given application is likely to be open source.”

“Most third parties won’t provide the source code behind their software,” notes Saraf. “But the question remains whether that supplier is as security-conscious as ZPE. Again, we found the solution with Synopsys, which gives us insight into any third-party software we include without requiring access to the source code.”

The solution: Comprehensive security testing with Synopsys AST

Different security solutions focus on different aspects of vulnerability detection and risk mitigation. By layering multiple solutions such as static analysis, dynamic analysis, and software composition analysis, ZPE covers a wide range of potential vulnerabilities, ensuring that code quality and security issues are identified at various stages during the software development life cycle and across different types of code.

Table showing ZPE Systems' security in layers

Coverity® provides the speed, ease of use, accuracy, industry standards compliance, and scalability to develop high-quality, secure applications. Coverity identifies critical quality defects and security vulnerabilities as code is written, early in ZPE’s development process when they are easiest to fix. Coverity seamlessly integrates automated security testing into CI/CD pipelines, supports existing development tools and workflows, and can be deployed either on-premises or in the cloud.

WhiteHat™ Dynamic is a software-as-a-service dynamic application security testing solution that allows businesses to quickly deploy a scalable web security program. No matter how many websites or how often they change, WhiteHat Dynamic can scale to meet any demand. It provides security and development teams with fast, accurate, and continuous vulnerability assessments of applications in QA and production, applying the same techniques hackers use to find weaknesses This enables ZPE to streamline the remediation process, prioritize vulnerabilities based on severity and threat, and focus on remediation and its overall security posture.

Black Duck® helps ZPE identify supply chain security and license risks even when it doesn’t have access to the underlying software’s code. This is a critical security tool for the modern software supply chain. Black Duck Binary Analysis can scan virtually any software, including desktop and mobile applications, third-party libraries, packaged software, and embedded system firmware. It quickly generates a complete Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), which tracks third-party and open source components, and identifies known security vulnerabilities, associated licenses, and code quality risks.

The result: A notable reduction of CVEs

“One of the outcomes from taking a comprehensive, layered approach to security testing has been a notable reduction in CVEs on the systems we deploy,” says Saraf.

“I think a lot of industry players don’t give enough attention to patching CVEs. They wait until after a security incident, or until a customer specifically asks. Unfortunately, it’s normal to see unpatched, outdated software running on critical infrastructure. The Equifax breach of 2017 is just one example that exposed the personal data of millions. It’s a particular problem with IoT and embedded devices—many of those systems get installed and forgotten. But it’s another attack surface, especially if you use the equipment for critical infrastructure automation.”

“ZPE’s goal is to reduce the attack surface of our systems to as close to zero as possible, either by making sure that software vulnerabilities are identified and addressed, and that our software is running the most secure and up-to-date versions. It’s an ongoing process— what is vulnerability-free today won’t necessarily be so tomorrow—which is why ZPE always stays security-conscious. I think the company’s commitment to security has positioned ZPE as a trusted partner for enterprises seeking secure automation solutions for their critical infrastructure needs.

ZPE Systems’ Services Delivery Platform accelerates time-to-market

ZPE Systems’ Services Delivery Platform accelerates time-to-market with any app, anytime, anywhere

IT teams can deliver instant business value with the on-demand services delivery architecture

Fremont, CA, April 25, 2023 — ZPE Systems’ Services Delivery Platform is IT’s ‘easy’ button for delivering instant business value. Instead of deploying dedicated NGFW hardware and Intel® NUCs, ZPE’s Intel-based platform runs 3rd party apps at remote locations delivered via ZPE Cloud app marketplace. This speed and flexibility simplify global service delivery and fleet management for manufacturing, healthcare, finance, and other industries, where any app can be automatically deployed from the cloud.

Why is this important?

Private-cloud and on-prem services must run on dedicated systems, which causes infrastructure sprawl. This complexity pulls IT teams away from generating revenue, recovering from outages, and stopping ransomware attacks. Their job becomes managing low-level infrastructure and inefficient delivery pipelines. The Services Delivery Platform alleviates this by giving them the speed and flexibility to:

  • Secure remote locations with cloud-deployed pen test agents & other services
  • Segment edge networks regardless of interface type
  • Eliminate supply chain risks with hardened devices
  • Shrink attack surfaces with swift centralized patch management
  • Collapse device stacks into 1RU or less using virtual services

Services Delivery Platform apps and services

Graphic: ZPE’s Services Delivery Platform is represented as blue blocks. Examples of 3rd-party hosted apps are represented in white blocks under Ecosystem Apps.

The Services Delivery Platform brings to life Gartner’s concept of platform engineering. This platform-as-a-service model allows admins to tailor environments with the right apps for SD-WAN, NGFW, pen testing, and other functions, without battling vendor lock-in or changes in security posture. They also gain a consistent management experience across private-cloud and on-prem solutions.

Teams typically avoid platform engineering because there are no best practices for creating the proper control plane management network on secure devices.

ZPE Systems worked with Big Tech to define these best practices, which enterprises can now apply to private-cloud colo and edge deployments using the Services Delivery Platform. This establishes the resilient control plane management network and platform engineering component, both on a single, multi-function device connected to the cloud.

Enterprises accelerate revenue generation, reduce outage costs, and stop ransomware attacks using this architecture.

How does it work?

Nodegrid edge routers bring dedicated LAN and WAN links through multiple interface types (serial, ethernet, USB, IPMI). These create a secure control plane — a Double-RingTM management architecture — while eliminating the hardware attack surface with security features including TPM 2.0, encrypted disk, geofencing, and fully-signed Nodegrid OS.

This network is the foundation of the Services Delivery Platform. Along with hosting the management network, Nodegrid devices directly run VMs, containers, and any choice of app using the onboard multi-core Intel CPU and Linux-based Nodegrid OS. This OS also extends automation across environments and devices to give teams end-to-end activation and chaining of SASE, NGFWs, SD-WAN, and any cloud or on-prem solution.

“I’ve been in ops for a long time. Most of your day is spent just figuring out how to get your environments to work right,” says James Cabe, Director, Technical Alliances at ZPE Systems. “The Services Delivery Platform is a game-changer. The whole thing sits right on the Nodegrid box and you can switch or swap out services whenever you need to. Just choose what you want to deploy and go. It’s all done via separate control plane with no attack surface and no exposure to the Internet.”
